DreamWorks Pictures has released a behind-the-scenes special, “Lincoln: An American Journey,” an exploration of the making of their highly commended film “Lincoln,” on Apple iTunes. The special will also be aired on television on Sunday, January 20, on KCBS at 9:00 a.m. (PST).

“Lincoln: An American Journey” is an inside look at the making of DreamWorks Pictures’ “Lincoln,” the film that has become a nationwide phenomenon, grossing over $150 million to date since its opening on November 9. “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, has received more awards nomination than any other film this year, including 12 Academy Award® nominations.

The special marks the first time audiences will be able to go behind the scenes with Steven Spielberg, Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field to experience how everyone came together over a 12-year journey to bring “Lincoln” to the big screen.

JE: So have we seen everything Disney Infinity ships with at launch?

JP: No, that’s not it. We showed what we call a Starter Pack play set, and that’s $74.99. It’ll come with software for the full game, the reader, and those three toys [Jack Sparrow, Mr. Incredible, Sully]. But there are more toys available in additional packs, there are unlocks available, there are coins available, and there are additional play sets, so you’ll have more IP.

JE: I have to assume some of this is content locked away on the disc, correct?

JP: Yes, there is some content locked on the disc. We’ll keep updating the game too. We want this to seriously be a game that is console, online, mobile. And it will phase in a little bit over time. Day 1, online will look a lot like console, and the mobile will be a little different – but mobile is going to have these experiences on it. I come from a social gaming company, that’s my background. These have to be live services, right? You’re changing these games in real time. That’s how mobile games make money: microtransactions. But some of the stuff has to be free to play. As you think out over the course of a couple years, if this platform is going to be as successful as I want it to be, we’re going to have to push into those uncomfortable yet exciting business models.”

JE: During the presentation, we saw a player’s rendition of Bowser’s Castle from Mario Kart, with the playable characters using their respective mounts and vehicles to race. Do you have any concerns about copyright issues with user-generated content?

JP: The user-generated content that can come out of [Disney Infinity] is exciting – we get to turn around and release that stuff to the community. We really respect people’s IP, and Disney has a great track record of that. We have a lot of lawyers making sure we do things the correct way!

JE: I think Wreck-It Ralph is perfect evidence of that…Switching gears now, I saw a fundamental shift at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show toward this concept of platform-agnosticism. Everyone is gaming across multiple devices. We have cross-platform headphones, Android controllers, things like that. How persistent will Disney Infinity be across all these platforms?

JP: At launch these aren’t going to be persistent, but they are going to be connected. The toys themselves – generation one, these toys are a big anchor – the toys have codes. These codes unlock unique value across all platforms.” [Pleasants clarified that yes, a single toy will unlock content unique to the platform you’re playing the game on.]

JE: So when I buy a $4.99 figurine, what is that adding to my existing experience?

JP: That figurine will unlock that character in the game, that respective property in the game itself. And that character brings with it an adventure or series of adventures they go on inside the world. They also bring their own gadgets and items into the Toy Box.

JE: John, there’s obviously one burning question on everyone’s mind in light of Disney’s recent acquisition of LucasFilm Ltd: Disney owns many properties, specifically the Marvel universe and Star Wars. Do you want to see these introduced into Disney Infinity?

JP: Done well, this is a great platform for any brand and series of IPs and characters. Yes, it’s crossed our minds but we haven’t announced anything. We’re very focused on this right now, but it’s a logical thing to think about. Just bringing the Disney/Pixar stuff together was tricky and interesting. Marvel’s a bit different, especially with their multiple universes. It needs to be thought through.”

JE: Essentially we’re looking at 3 different games – at least based on what you’ve revealed so far – inside a single SKU. How much time do you think players can invest in just the story-based elements of Monsters University, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Incredibles?

JP: You’ll have more than a full console experience. Dozens and dozens and dozens of hours throughout all the play sets, not including the Toy Box aspect.

JE: There’s a huge opportunity for Disney to seed this initiative across their cruises, global theme parks, Radio Disney, ABC…It would be neat to visit Epcot, for example, and pick up a version of Captain Jack Sparrow unique to that location, especially if he unlocked very unique content. Is that something you’re entertaining?

JP: Yes. One thing that gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility is the power discs. Those change environments, capabilities, characters. [Disney Infinity] is intended to be a platform that can leverage that synergy. I want to be honest here: We haven’t done anything yet. Once it gets out there and it’s an awesome experience on all platforms, gets good adoption across all the channels…we’ll leverage that. We’ve got a trick up our sleeve with regards to the parks, but I’m not allowed to talk about that just yet…

Investors have apparently begun to recognize positive factors similar to those we have mentioned in this report, including earnings growth. This has helped drive up the company’s shares by a sharp 28.16% over the past year, a rise that has exceeded that of the S&P 500 Index. Regarding the stock’s future course, although almost any stock can fall in a broad market decline, DIS should continue to move higher despite the fact that it has already enjoyed a very nice gain in the past year.

DISNEY (WALT) CO has improved earnings per share by 17.2% in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company has demonstrated a pattern of positive earnings per share growth over the past two years. We feel that this trend should continue. During the past fiscal year, DISNEY (WALT) CO increased its bottom line by earning $3.12 versus $2.52 in the prior year. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings ($3.42 versus $3.12).

DIS’s revenue growth trails the industry average of 15.8%. Since the same quarter one year prior, revenues slightly increased by 3.4%. This growth in revenue appears to have trickled down to the company’s bottom line, improving the earnings per share.

The return on equity has improved slightly when compared to the same quarter one year prior. This can be construed as a modest strength in the organization. Compared to other companies in the Media industry and the overall market, DISNEY (WALT) CO’s return on equity exceeds that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.

After ridding the universe of the Dark Side of the Force, Rick McCallum is aiming his cinematic light sabers at the Czech Communists.

The 60-year-old “Star Wars” producer moved to Prague with his Czech wife months before his former employer, George Lucas, sold his company to Walt Disney Co. (DIS) for $4.05 billion. McCallum has now started work with local filmmakers on the real-life escape tale of five anti-Communists who sparked a major manhunt across East Germany in 1953.

He hopes the story of Cold War brutality will blunt the rise of the Czech Communists, who form part of 10 of 13 regional councils and could join the national government for the first time since 1989 in 2014 elections.

“Nothing is more transformative than a film,” McCallum said in an interview at his new production company in the historic quarter below Prague Castle. “It can change people’s viewpoints, and if it’s a good film, it just might change what is politically going on in this country before elections.”

After years in isolation, the Communists are again gaining ground, opinion polls show, even with views that echo back to an authoritarian past. Communist leader Vojtech Filip praised North Korea’s Kim Jong-il after his 2011 death. Also that year, lawmaker Marta Semelova lauded Cold War-era border guards who shot at fleeing Czechs and urged more “Bolshevization.”

Armed Resistance
The 80 million-koruna ($4 million) film, which should appear in Czech cinemas before the elections, is in the pre- production stages. It plans to tell the true story of the Masin brothers, who as teenagers established an armed resistance cell after the Communists took power in Czechoslovakia in 1948.

Ctirad and Josef Masin were the sons of General Josef Masin, executed by the Gestapo for his role in the Czech resistance. The brothers decided to fight Communism in the belief that the Americans would soon come and free them from totalitarianism.

In October 1953, the brothers and three other members of the cell resolved to flee the country and reach the American zone in partitioned Berlin to join the U.S. army, learn military insurgency tactics and return to carry on the fight.

After a bungled car-hijacking attempt, they were identified and pursued by tens of thousands of German officers and Soviet troops for almost a month. They killed at least three East German policemen in trying to evade capture.

Escape to U.S.
Three of the group, the Masins and Milan Paumer, reached West Berlin, joined the U.S. Army and settled in the States, while the other two escapees were sent back and executed, along with members of the cell who had stayed home. After the 1989 Velvet Revolution, Ctirad and Josef refused to return to Czechoslovakia because the Communist Party had not been banned.

McCallum was born in Germany, the son of a U.S. military pilot father and Pat York, a photographer who later married actor Michael York. The producer said he wants to remind Czechs of the “unimaginable suffering” eastern Europe underwent under communism.

He first heard tales about the Masin brothers in 2000, when he was in the Czech Republic to scout for locations for the first Star Wars prequel. Their harrowing 32-day escape to West Berlin reminded him of Indiana Jones.

After meeting with Czech director Tomas Masin, a distant relative, McCallum bought the film rights for the Czech prize- winning novel “So Far So Good — the Masins — the Greatest Story of the Cold War.”

‘Valmont’ Writer
The book is based on archived documents and interviews with the brothers and their younger sister. Published in 2004, its author was the Czech screenwriter and emigrant Jan Novak, who collaborated with director Milos Forman on the script for “Valmont.”

The movie is planned as the first segment of a trilogy called “How could this happen?” Two further films will address the Nazi massacre of 34,000 Jews in Ukraine’s Babi Yar and boy soldiers in Sierra Leone.

Murder Propaganda
McCallum said the film will try to put the sometimes-brutal actions of the Masin brothers into context.

“If we can get people to equally love and hate the movie then we’re successful,” he said. “If it’s a good film, it may change the political views of people.”

Over 90% of Villages Nature’s
surface area will be made up of green spaces – indeed,
built up areas will not exceed 10% - and will provide new
experiences centered around water, gardens, footpaths and
horse-back riding trails, an organic farm, exploration trails,
as well as culinary events and festivals. The entire resort will
be developed around Europe’s largest water park and its
3,500m² geothermal lagoon, the icon of the destination.

How to live differently during a few days, far from one’s
daily life and habits? Villages Nature designers have agreed
to address this question by re-examining the core tenets
of architecture: no ground floor, no facades, no roof. For
Jacques Ferrier (architect of the French Pavilion at the
Shanghai World’s Fair), Jean de Gastines and the Patriarche
Group (the architects who helped create Center Parcs),
Thierry Huau (an architect, landscape designer and town
planner), as well as the Walt Disney Imagineering team (the
unique department devoted to creating all the Disney theme
parks and hotels worldwide), the issue was to make Villages
Nature visitors understand, from the moment they first set
eyes on the resort, that they were entering a different world.

To nurture their discussions, these various architects took
their inspiration from the attempts made to unite Man
and Nature during that very special period straddling the
19th and 20th centuries – the Arts & Crafts movement,
Art Nouveau and Jugendstil, Japanese Zen gardens. A link
was made with contemporary developments on sustainable
architecture through the works of visionary ecological
architecture artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser who,
between the 1970s and the year 2000, sought to unite once
again Man and Nature. They concluded from all this that it
was necessary to rekindle the spark of a stylistic expression
that had set nature at the core of architecture, by going still
further.

Thus came the theme of suspended gardens intended
to showcase the lakeside residences by fully blending
architecture and landscape. Nature was to be so interlocked
with architecture that the same place would be different
from one season to the next, whether the villages are in the
forest or on the lake shore.

The same ambition, the same boldness, the same desire
to reinvent can be found in the Villages Nature project’s
other mainstay: the geothermal lagoon. The possibility of
an unlimited, natural hot water supply, with no ecological
footprint whatsoever, has multiplied the architects’ options
and stimulated their imagination. Geothermal energy has
thus helped imagine the creation of gigantic pools, three
times the size of the Center Parc Aqua Mundos and their
already exceptional stature.

Part of the lagoon will be sheltered by architectural works
which, once again, will have neither true facades nor any
real roof! Glass will be omnipresent, just as nature will,
and what could best be described as a truncated pyramid
(evocative of Mayan pyramids) will take on the aspect of a
volcano emerging from a vast expanse of water. Space use
will be unusual: upon/within this transparent hill, both the
inside and the outside will be places to discover and to enjoy
walks, games and well-being.

As the major icon of the Villages Nature project, this
lagoon, the only one of its kind in the world, will be set
at the crossroads of all sightlines in the resort and will be
visible from all points.

Deep geothermal energy, the resort’s symbol
Villages Nature will be a unique resort in terms of
sustainable tourism on such a scale. The use of deep
geothermal energy, the site’s true genius, will make it
unique and will become the symbol of the destination.
Most notably, the destination’s heating requirements,
including those of the water park, will be supplied by this
renewable, sustainable energy, which does produces no
greenhouse gas emissions:  two wells bored to a depth of
1,800 metres, water at a temperature of 78°C will feed the
surface heating networks using a calorie transfer process,
prior to being re-injected into the underground water
table called dogger. In the future, geothermal energy will
also help supply up to 30% of heating requirements for
both Disneyland Theme Parks and the Disneyland Hotel.

Man lived in close intimacy with nature

A shared determination towards innovation in tourism and
inspiration for future generations
It was because they shared a common determination with regards to innovation
in their core tourism business, and to inspire future generations that Pierre
& Vacances Center Parcs and Euro Disney joined forces to design Villages
Nature. This desire to launch a holiday destination project on a European scale,
sustainable both in its design and in its operations, had in fact been rooted for
a long time deep within both partners’ corporate values. Indeed, Disney has
created or been involved in numerous films about nature, notably films from
Commandant Cousteau; while the Pierre & Vacances Center Parcs Group has
widely materialised its commitment to Sustainable Development, through its
Domaine de Belle Dune in the Bay of Somme (labelled Eco-Village), or its
brand new Center Parc des Trois Forêts Moselle-Lorraine.

A unique resort
Villages Nature will be a unique resort, entirely separate from the Disneyland
Paris and Center Parcs concepts, even though it was inspired by the success
of those major destinations and by the values upheld by both companies. It
will allow visitors over a stay of several days to recharge their batteries, share
emotions, and rediscover nature around a variety of themes and activities. It
will, in an entertaining and educational way, raise awareness among future
generations, causing them to think about our natural environment and the
future of our planet. Water Park, Geothermal Lagoon, Adventure Island,
Amazing Gardens, Organic Farm… Each one a name which, tomorrow, will
become reality, inventing the new lexicon of holidays with a difference… Each
one an exceptional attraction, an unexpected experience and a way to reconnect
with nature, with your loved ones and with yourself… All this in the very heart
of France and Europe…

The site will feature a central welcome reception area and information spots,
themed restaurants and shops, as well as a lakeland area whose contours
will provide secret nooks sheltering the cottages and apartments, the whole
interspersed with preserved forest: there will be a variety of atmospheres and
innumerable surprises…

While the fundamentals of the project can be expressed in a single word, nature,
the issue is not to cultivate some degree of nostalgia or some utopic “back to
nature” idea, but rather to face the future with a decidedly positive attitude,
simultaneously celebrating the lasting relationship between Man and Nature in
the past, the present and the future. Accordingly, the very best in technology,
architecture, construction and landscaping will be used with a view to turning
the performance into thrills, and the excellence into emotion.

- Thus Euro Disney will provide Villages Nature with its unrivalled expertise
in the development of theme parks and hotels at Disneyland Paris, the leading
tourist destination in Europe with over 230 million visitors since 1992; the
worldwide strength of the Disney brand in terms of innovation and creativity,
to offer its visitors unforgettable moments within a cohesive story; and its expertise of European tourist market trends and European families’ expectations
in terms of quality of experience and stay.

Located close to disneyland Paris, europe’s leading tourist destination
The Villages Nature site is located 6 Km south of Disneyland Paris,
north of the Brie Forest (in French: Brie Boisée), in Seine-et-Marne.
This project, which could span up to 500 hectares and be developed
over a 20 year timeframe, will be launched depending on market
conditions.  The first phase would be comprised of 175 hectares located within the municipalities of Villeneuve-le-Comte and Bailly-Romainvilliers.and could open in 2015.

An exceptional site enjoying ideal transport connections
From the inception of the project, Pierre & Vacances Center Parcs
and Euro Disney’s ambition was to invent and establish proximity
tourism in the heart of France, in the heart of Europe.

To give Villages Nature the means to fully express itself, a very large
site with very specific environmental features was required. This vast
area surrounded by forests existed in the Paris region not far from
Disneyland Paris, Europe’s leading tourist destination.

Not only will this proximity foster a complementary interplay
between both resorts, but also this favourable geographic location
will put Villages Natures within reach of European visitors, thanks
to the exceptional transport infrastructures that already exist in Val
d’Europe, and which will continue to grow in the future under the
aegis of the French authorities: France’s leading TGV hub at Marnela-Vallée/Chessy, the RER A railway, the A4 motorway, intercity bus
lines and more.

A unique destination
Villages Nature will be a destination in its own right, separate from
Disneyland Paris and Pierre & Vacances and from their respective
Theme Parks and Hotels and Center Parcs concepts. Villages Nature
will represent a journey, a gentle, appealing experience, an imaginary
trip over a three-day, four-day or weeklong period… These will be
holidays, a break in the daily routine, where technological prowess
will be harnessed to serve emotion al experiences and simple pleasures:
to see, to listen, to feel, to move, to discover, to share… Villages Nature is
not only a new geographic experience, but a new sensory experience
as well.

An opportunity for individual and institutional investors
The first phase of Villages Nature would include the construction of
1 730 lodging units, either apartments or cottages, and measuring
between 32 m² and 85 m², located within three villages: two villages
around the lake and one village in the forest.  Indoor and outdoor
leisure facilities are also planned, for a total 70 000 m² area.

Based on the 40-year proven real estate development model of Pierre
& Vacances, the housing units would be sold to individual investors as
tourism residences (in French : Residences de Tourisme) while facilities
would be sold to institutional investors. The housing units and facilities
will be leased and managed by the Villages Nature operating company.
Pre-commercialisation could start during the second half of 2011.

Questions asked to Dominique Cocquet, Managing Director, Villages Nature

What kind of territorial integration do you expect for the future
destination ?
Our need to fully integrate Villages Nature into its host territory in Seine-et-Marne in
general, and into its surrounding municipalities in particular, is a crucial aspect of our
sustainable development approach. That is why we did not wait for the actual launch
of Villages Nature to initiate dialogue with the relevant local elected officials, and held
several public meetings to allow for the best possible appropriation of the project. We
shall continue to do this on a regular basis until the destination opens. Moreover, we
have begun meeting with local associations interested in the living environment and in
protecting the natural environment, as well as various business associations (Farming,
Retail, Craftsmen, Construction) in the département, in order to provide information
and enhance the project through their comments. In addition to this local consultation,
the destination itself is expected to contribute to the growth of the area by creating 4,500
direct and indirect jobs by 2015, generating an attractive tax revenue stream, and by
working in synergy with local business players including farmers and tourist industry
professionals.

What are your next three priorities to initiate the project’s actual launch ?
In the coming year, we shall be tackling three major tasks. To begin with, between now and
the end of 2010, the setting up of all public and land acquisition procedures. Then we shall
continue with the architectural, town-planning and technical studies, which actually should
extend throughout 2012 and 2013. Finally, probably during the second half of 2011, we
shall launch commercialisation of the 1,730 lodging units planned for phase 1. All this in
order to be ready for our plan to start construction works in the first half of 2013, depending

When people are looking for action packed, 3D movies, they normally think of IMAX (NYSE: IMAX). IMAX is the most widely used system for special-venue film presentations. As of September 2012, there are 697 IMAX theatres in 52 countries. Though revenues decreased 6% in 2012, their stock rose almost 14%. While its stock performed worse than Cinemark or Regal, it did post a remarkable 488% increase in capital expenditures, which correlated to its 242% decrease in FCF. IMAX seems to be focused on growth, which could work to the advantage of companies such as Walt Disney (NYSE: DIS) and DreamWorks Animation (NASDAQ: DWA).

Disney saw approximately a 2.5% increase in revenues, though the company has other avenues of revenue. Their business is separated into five different business areas of media networks, parks and resorts, studio entertainment, consumer products and interactive media. ESPN, Disney Studios, and parks and resorts made up over 70% of Disney’s revenues in 2012. With a 31% increase in Disney’s stock, they didn’t perform as well as Cinemark, but they did post a 28% increase in FCF and over a 6% increase in capital expenditures. Though there doesn’t seem to be anything magical about their stock, it does seem to be on a steady increase both short term and long term.

DreamWorks is an American animation studio based in Glendale, California, and has created films such as Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, Shrek Forever After, and Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted - all four of which rank in the top 50 highest grossing films of all time. Even with films like this, revenues decreased over 11% in 2012. DreamWorks seems more like a nightmare than a dream as FCF decreased 410% and capital expenditures fell 19% in 2012. Shareholders felt the result of this as the stock fell over 9% last year.

The Bottom Line New movie releases for any of these companies could play a major role in how they perform, but it’s difficult to know which films will succeed and which will fail. After all, the industry is ever changing and full of unknowns. It does seem as though DreamWorks is a company that I would avoid having too much hope in at this time. It would be difficult to just pick one company between Cinemark, Regal, or Disney as ‘most likely to succeed’ in the class of 2013. They have all shown a steady history of success, and still post favorable numbers.

CFO Jay Rasulo is also in charge of the media giant’s sustainability efforts. While this strategy may work at Disney, could it fly at other companies?

In 2011, Disney launched a behemoth sea craft — a 4,000-person occupancy vessel called the Disney Dream. She’s been a profitable barge. According to the company’s 2011 annual report, the Dream accounted for 3% of the nearly $1 billion increase in domestic revenue for Disney’s “Parks and Resorts” division.

But the ship’s financial success doesn’t exempt it from an effort, led by Disney’s head of sustainability, to reach zero net greenhouse gas emissions, company-wide. In that sense, the Dream set the company back, increasing its 2011 direct emissions by 15%, compared to the 2006 baseline. Parks and Resorts, like every department, must include greenhouse gas emissions as part of their profit and loss statements.

You would think that such a moneymaker would get a pass from the numbers guy. But at Disney (DIS), the numbers guy is also the green guy. Jay Rasulo, the company’s CFO, oversees Disney’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability initiatives.

Walt Disney Co. (DIS), working to improve results at its interactive division, unveiled a video-game system that reduces development costs by incorporating characters from multiple movies in the same game.

The Infinity platform includes a base unit that connects to computers and game consoles, Burbank, California-based Disney said today in a statement. Plastic figures set on top of the unit appear on screen in games. The company will sell the figures, as well as discs that add scenery and features. A starter kit with the base and three figures is priced at $75.

With Infinity, Disney will be able to add content without developing new games from scratch each time a film comes out, according to John Pleasants, co-president of Disney interactive. That’s critical for a division Disney Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger has said will be profitable in 2013 after losses of $1.6 billion in the past six years.

“It’s something we expect to be able to live on for years, and we can continuously add to it,” Pleasants said in an interview. “It’s not just a game that we’re shipping.”

Pleasants, who joined Disney with the acquisition of social-game maker Playdom in 2010, urged his designers to “think big” in developing the system, according to John Blackburn, vice president of Disney’s Avalanche Software unit in Salt Lake City, Utah, which oversaw the project.

Player Freedom
Infinity is Disney’s largest game project in terms of the cost and characters involved, Blackburn said, without giving specifics on the finances. The initial release will involve 20 Disney and Pixar characters.

Adventures within Infinity leave a lot to the player, the executives said. Captain Jack Sparrow, from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, could go on missions with Buzz Lightyear, one of the “Toy Story” characters, while riding in Cinderella’s coach.

“It’s like your parent’s living room floor, where nobody told you what to do with your toys,” John Vignocchi, an executive producer of the game, said in an interview.

By combining collectible figures with video-game play, the Infinity platform, which goes on sale in June, is similar to Activision Blizzard Inc. (ATVI)’s “Skylanders” games, which generated $500 million in sales of games and related merchandise last year.

Pirates Games
Disney is changing direction as sales of traditional video games have fallen. Video-game software sales declined 26 percent to $1.54 billion in 2012, NPD said. Disney released six titles for consoles last year, down from 23 in 2010, according to the company and VGChartz.com, a research site.

Its products have sometimes disappointed consumers. A group called Revive Potco gathered 2,000 signatures asking Disney to invest more in its Pirates of the Caribbean game.

Brad Phillips, who follows the business on a blog called In the Life of Nerd, was critical of that game and another called “World of Cars,” tied to the popular Pixar films.

“It was a terrible waste of the Cars brand and one that was likely designed and rushed out in an attempt to profit from the movies,” Phillips wrote last February, the same month Disney shut it down.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney animation studios, also thought some movie-themed games lacked substance, according to Blackburn. He was reluctant to include Pixar content in Infinity until the game makers showed him designs where the disparate characters shared a common look.

Game Challenges
Disney gained 0.6 percent to $50.89 at 2:28 p.m. in New York. The shares advanced 33 percent in 2012, compared with 13 percent for the S&P 500 Index.

Larry Gerbrandt, a long-time media analyst now with Media Valuation Partners in Los Angeles, said he is skeptical the interactive unit can ever produce the consistent earnings of Disney’s cable TV and theme-park businesses. He pointed to challenges facing Zynga Inc. (ZNGA), the social game leader, which has fallen 74 percent since it first sold shares in December 2011.

“It’s a very streaky business,” Gerbrandt said. “All you have to do is look at Zynga to see how hard it is to create hits and come up with sequels. If they could be happy with the Disney website, they’d be fine. It’s when they move beyond that they run into problems.”

Disney (DIS +0.6%) signs a deal with AT&T to provide content for its U-verse service. The deal will give U-verse customers more options to watch live coverage from ESPN stations and on demand content on a variety of mobile devices.

The Walt Disney Company (DIS) today announced a comprehensive long-term distribution agreement to deliver Disney’s robust lineup of top quality sports, news and entertainment content to AT&T U-verse TV customers across televisions, computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles and internet-enabled televisions. The renewal agreement enhances the multichannel business model and supports the companies’ mutual goal to deliver the best video content to customers across multiple platforms.

As part of the new multi-year deal, AT&T U-verse will introduce several new services, including the full suite of authenticated WATCH products, ESPN 3D, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, Disney Junior and the upcoming ABC News/Univision Joint Venture, a 24/7 news, information and lifestyle multi-platform network for English-dominant and bilingual Hispanics, the youngest and fastest-growing demographic in the U.S. In total, approximately 70 services are covered by the broad scope of this agreement including: ABC, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Deportes, ESPNEWS, ESPN Classic, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN 3D, ESPN GamePlan, ESPN Full Court, ESPN3, The Longhorn Network, and retransmission consent for WABC-TV, KABC-TV, WLS-TV, KGO-TV, KTRK-TV, WTVD-TV and KFSN-TV, as well as more than 10 high-definition networks.

AT&T U-verse customers will receive broad access to existing authenticated products like WATCH Disney Channel, WATCH Disney XD, WATCH Disney Junior and WatchESPN (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, ESPN Goal Line and ESPN Buzzer Beater) as well as the to-be-launched WATCH ABC and WATCH ABC Family services, through the networks’ own WATCH sites and apps as well as AT&T’s U-verse.com site and apps. These products will give AT&T U-verse customers more opportunities to access live and video on demand content, both in-home and out-of-home, on their computers, smartphones, tablets and gaming consoles. ESPN3 will also be available to any residential AT&T High Speed Internet customer, across screens and devices.

The extensive and expanded rights package for Video On Demand content to AT&T U-verse TV customers includes:

              ABC On Demand, which currently features a selection of top-rated primetime entertainment programming, including episodes of such popular current ABC shows as “Castle,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Once Upon A Time,” “Private Practice” and “Revenge.” Full current seasons will be made available on a number of shows.

 This week, winter has descended upon Canada Pavilion as part of Limited Time Magic. Guests can meet and take photos with some favorite Disney characters in the snow for this week only. I stopped by Canada Pavilion’s Northwest Mercantile this past weekend to see what the merchandise location had in store.

Northwest Mercantile houses a variety of Canadian-themed goods. Upon entry, I was greeted by the shop’s newest items – a selection of Canadian Native Handicrafts by Monague Native Crafts. I asked Sylvie Brumbaugh, merchandiser for World Showcase, about these new goods.

“I’m always looking for unique items for World Showcase,” said Sylvie. “When deciding on assortments that capture the essence of a particular country, we consider several things including popular marketplace trends. For the Canadian Native Handicrafts line, we have apparel, pottery and an expanded collection of dream catchers. Monague Native Crafts is a leading Canadian supplier of these items, so it’s great to carry them in the location.”

I liked some of the more unique items I found in the shop including Sasquatch Sweat soap and the ketchup-flavored potato chips. Sylvie told me some of the most popular items are the Hatley pajamas (perfect for a cold Canadian winter’s night!).

My favorite things, however, give a nod to the 360-degree film at the pavilion, “O Canada.” Disney Design Group created the artwork which Sylvie applied to hats, shirts, tumblers, mugs and more. I like the simplicity of the red “Canada” shirt, while the plaid moose pattern is fun. I also saw the awesome World Showcase shirt we created for the 30th Anniversary of Epcot.
